In a Better World (2010)
An incredible movie about life. How we no nothing about it and how it’s impossible to accomplish it. Two boys raised by different, almost opposite, kind of families. One receives a liberal and affective upbringing, while the other, a more conservative and “straight to the point” one. But they have things in common. Both suffer, as any other human being on Earth. So when they get to know each other a beautiful friendship is born. Apart from the relationship between the kids, the film was able to go through all the characters personalities and issues. That’s why “In a Better World” received the Oscar for Best Foreign Movie last year. Since unfortunately I’m not in the mood to make a detailed description of all the areas explored, I’ll write about what I thought it was more interesting. The notions of evil and of good are worked incredibly well. In contrast with the dazzling sight-seeings that are shown, the worst of human nature is also pictured. Why are people mean? How to react to it? Revenge? But isn’t revenge the same kind of meanness? It doesn’t matter if it’s in Denmark or in Africa, people can be cruel if they want to. That’s part of life. The important thing if to be the best person possible and don’t let ourselves be frustrated by the actions of others. Sometimes evil is not really evil. Sometimes it’s a consequence of a deep heartache. You never know. We never know. But wherever there are bad people doing bad things, good things and people also exist. That’s the beauty of life and that’s the brilliance of this film.
What do I talk about when I talk about running
(Do que eu falo quando falo sobre corrida)
Haruki Murakami
I’ve just finished reading this book and I already feel inspired. I want to write and run even though I’m aware of my inability for both. Haruki Murakami describes himself as he actually looks like in his novels: someone down to earth and simple. Perhaps it’s exactly because of his truthness towards life that the books he writes captivate so many people all over the world. All the insights he presents on “What do I talk about when I talk about running” are valuable and meaningful. They fit everyone. That’s his magic, the fact anyone can relate to him and his humble words. This book is for everyone who’s looking for some sort of inspiration, of any kind. And runners, of course.
Bikur Ha-Tizmoret (2007) by Eran Kolirin, starring Sasson Gabai, Ronit Elkabetz and Saleh Bakri.
The Band’s Visit (2007)
Great story about loneliness and life as it is. Apart from all the IsraelxArab World polemics people are still people and we still share similar concerns and joys. This is a film that express beautifully all that. The main actors were superbs, proving that in the Middle East there is much more than tragedy.
